Cary Bailey, Nurse Practitioner, Joins Marshall Browning Hospital As Hospitalist

Du Quoin, Illinois - April 12, 2012 - Du Quoin resident, Cary Bailey, recently joined Marshall Browning Hospital as a Nurse Practitioner/Hospitalist. Bailey is a graduate of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Due to the tremendous growth in medical knowledge and increasing number of medical specialists, hospitalized patients often benefit from a hospitalist to bring all points of the healthcare team together. A hospitalist must organize the communication between different doctors (cardiology, pulmonology, oncology, etc.) caring for a patient by serving as the point of contact for primary care doctors and the hospital staff for questions, updates and putting together a plan of care. They are also the main practitioner for family members to contact for updates on a loved one, or to express concerns about care. The hospitalist must coordinate hospital care and also serves as a care manager to assure proper inpatient and outpatient consultations are made. A new diabetic may need to see a dietician, endocrinologist, and be established with a primary care physician if they do not have one. A hospitalist develops and coordinates this care plan tailored to each patient and their individual needs.

Prior to joining Marshall Browning Hospital, Bailey specialized in the medical care of acutely ill hospitalized patients at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for over 13 years. While at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale she worked in the Emergency Room and in cardiovascular procedures with Prairie Heart Institute.

Being a local resident of the Du Quoin/Pinckneyville area all of her life, Bailey is proud to take a hospitalist position at Marshall Browning Hospital. Bailey commented, "My mother, Sandy Gant, has worked at Marshall Browning Hospital throughout my childhood. Everyone knows me and it really feels like family here."

Bailey will be in the hospital daily Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and rounding on weekends. Marshall Browning Hospital CEO, Edwin Gast, commented "Cary is highly trained and will greatly enhance the services provided to our inpatients. She lives in the community and has a very good rapport with local physicians. Physicians will be able to check on, give care suggestions, and help manage care of their patients closely with Cary. Having Cary become part of the hospitalist team will provide continuity in the care patients receive and with having an in-house physician hospitalist available 24 hours a day this hybrid care system should benefit patients at Marshall Browning Hospital greatly."

"I have great confidence in our local physicians and we have open communication," says Bailey. "The main objective of this new role at our hometown hospital is to bridge patients, their family doctor, medical specialists, and the hospital care team together so the patient gets well-rounded care." With Marshall Browning Hospital's recent affiliation with Southern Illinois Healthcare and Bailey's long work history at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, patients who want to stay close to home for local specialist care will have a strong link to coordinate the process.
