New Hippotherapy Program Available in Du Quoin

Du Quoin, Illinois - August 19, 2011 - Marshall Browning Hospital Rehab Services Department, The W Ranch and Equine Escape, Ltd. are pleased to announce the opening of the Hippotherapy Program in Du Quoin, IL.

Marshall Browning Hospital is a critical access hospital whose mission is to be a leader and innovator in rural health for Perry County and the surrounding communities. The Rehab Services department at Marshall Browning Hospital has entered into partnership with Stan and Patti Wilson, owners of the W Ranch/Equine Escape, Ltd., in order to provide an opportunity for adults and children 6 years and over to participate in an 8 week Hippotherapy Program.

Hippotherapy began in the United States in the 1970's. Hippotherapy, which utilizes horses as the treatment tool, is provided by Occupational Therapists to help address sensory issues and postural and/or motor responses. As the horse moves, patients integrate postural reflexes, develop balance and equilibrium reactions, normalize muscle tone, and helps increase strength of trunk and extremities. The horse's movement and the horse itself provide sensory stimulation and help foster an emotional connection that promotes language, focus and motivation.

Hippotherapy sessions are scheduled to begin the week of September 12 and continue through November 4. Participants will be required to have a physician's order for Occupational Therapy and that states that the participant is physically able to participate in an equine-assisted activity. Participants will then contact Occupational Therapy at Marshall Browning Hospital at 618-542-2146, ext. 1099 to schedule an evaluation prior to the September 12 start date. Occupational Therapy services are covered by most private insurance providers and the Illinois Department of Public Aid.

As there is only one 8 week session scheduled for this fall, interested participants should contact Marshall Browning Hospital Rehab Services as soon as possible. Space in this program is limited.
