Short-Term Care (Swing Bed Care)

Short-term Skilled Care

Where do you go if you're not quite ill enough for acute care hospital services but too ill to be at home? Our Swing Bed program is able to provide the care needed for those "in-between" times.

Swing Bed Program

The term Swing Bed has nothing to do with the structure or movement of your bed! It simply means that the status of the number of acute care beds the hospital is allowed by the Illinois Department of Public Health can "swing" according to the type of care needed by the patient. For example, if you were in the hospital with a broken hip, you would be in acute care for several days. As your condition improves you will no longer need all the services of acute care but you might need more physical therapy to get you ready to go home. Your status would then "swing" from acute care to skilled nursing. The Skilled Nursing or Swing Bed patients are cared for on the Medical-Surgical unit so that you would not have to move to a new unit or even to a new room. We also accept transfers from other acute hospitals when sort term rehabilitation services are needed.

Every patient may not qualify for the Swing Bed Program. The goal of the program is to help patients return to the activities of daily living that they were able to do before their acute illness and the patient must require services that cannot be rendered in the home.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation is the chief focus of the Swing Bed Program. The Nursing staff is always present to assist when needed but Swing Bed patients are encouraged to do as much for themselves as they possibly can. This helps the patient to make good progress on the road to going home.
