Du Quoin, Illinois - February 6, 2015 - The American Heart Association's GO RED for Women's Heart Health Awareness Day was held Friday, February 6, 2015. Marshall Browning Hospital employees wore their red in support of the campaign and were asked to donate $5 to wear jeans. All proceeds raised will be donated to the hospital's HeartWalk team who will participate in the American Heart Association HeartWalk later this year.

While heart disease is both preventable and controllable, it remains the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. The American Heart Association implemented the Go Red for Women campaign to recognize and bring awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of women. Each year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. But 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Important risk factors for heart disease that you can do something about are: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol/high triglyceride levels, diabetes and pre-diabetes, smoking, being overweight or obese, being physically inactive, having family history of early heart disease, and having a history of preeclampsia. Both men and women need to take heart disease risk seriously - and take action now to reduce that risk.

In honor of American Heart Month, Marshall Browning Hospital will be hosting a luncheon program at 12 noon on Thursday, February 19 on "The Signs of Stroke" presented by Karen Williams, Nursing Director. The earlier a person having a stroke is diagnosed, the greater their options are for a full recovery. For reservations for the luncheon, please call 877-480-4040.
