Laboratory Manager - Medical Laboratory
JOB SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Manager performs and supervises the performance of all Laboratory procedures and the recording of test results. The Lab Manager is responsible for the testing performed in all areas of the laboratory. He/She assigns and directs the training and management of laboratory personnel. In addition, this person is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all laboratory equipment. All responsibilities must be managed within the guidelines of hospital policy, JCAHO, Illinois state standards, and current Federal Guidelines (CLIA).
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education: The Lab Manager must be a Medical Technologist and have a bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology with at least 2 years of experience in nonwaived testing in the designated specialty/subspecialty area. Also, he or she must have earned the minimum of an associate degree in a lab science or Medical Technology Program from an accredited institution.
B. Training and Experience: He/ she must have a minimum of four years of laboratory working experience.
C. Certification: MT/MLS (ASCP or AMT), CLS(NCALMP)
D. Must have qualified as a supervisor under CLIA regulations for moderate and high-complexity testing personnel (493.1423, Feb. 28, 1992, Federal Register).
E. Job Knowledge: The Lab Manager must understand the operation of laboratory equipment and be familiar with standard laboratory methods and techniques. He/she must know how to utilize available resources economically and expediently for optimum and reliable patient care. The Lab Manager must manage interpersonal working relationships among all employees to deliver quality laboratory results.
